Teaching and Learning CoLabs

CDE’s Office of Standards and Instructional Support is excited to announce the Teaching and Learning CoLabs -- free professional development opportunities for K-12 teachers and administrators that are developed in collaboration with institutions of higher education and state teaching organizations.

This year’s CoLabs will be held at the following locations:

  • Colorado Mesa University on Thursday, June 2
  • The University of Northern Colorado. Tentatively scheduled for Wednesday, June 8.
  • CSU Pueblo. TBD.

Participants will be able to attend sessions focused on reading, writing, and communicating; health and physical education; mathematics; and science. School leaders can register for sessions in the administration track. Schools are encouraged to register in teams.

Setting the Standard Webinar: Making the Most of Mathematics Materials

In this mathematics webinar, Raymond Johnson, CDE's mathematics specialist, will take a closer look at the role curriculum materials play in the modern math classroom and highlight how teachers can select and use materials to make teaching more effective.

Second Annual Colorado Collaborative Youth Summit

The Second Annual Colorado Collaborative Youth Summit is scheduled for Friday, April 22 to Saturday, April 23.

The summit will bring together young people from across Colorado for a two-day virtual conference with the goal of connecting and inspiring all youth to embrace leadership roles in their communities by providing an open and inclusive space to further expand their knowledge and skills.

All Colorado youths, ages 13-26, are invited to apply to present at the summit. Submissions will be accepted on a rolling basis, with priority given to submissions received before Monday, March 7. Proposals for presentations by youth-only teams, as well as youth-adult teams, will be accepted. No adult-only proposals will be accepted.

2022 Bullying Prevention Model Policy now available

The 2022 Colorado Bullying Prevention and Education Best Practices and Model Policy document is available on CDE's website. This updated model policy was crafted with input from a stakeholder committee including families of students who have experienced bullying, public education students, community members, and educational leaders. The package also includes sample bullying reporting and investigation forms as well as a flowchart to support leaders in their investigations.

Now open: School Counselor Corps Grant program Request for Applications

The 2022-23 School Counselor Corps Grant Request for Application is available for education providers. Approximately $600,000 will be available for the new RFA, which will focus on planning in the first year and implementation in the second, third and fourth years of the grant.

The School Counselor Corps Grant program seeks to increase the availability of effective school-based counseling within schools to increase the graduation rate within the state and increase the percentage of students who appropriately prepare for, apply to, and continue into postsecondary education.

This RFA is released prior to the approval of a four-year grant cycle and is contingent on any funding appropriated to the School Counselor Corps Grant program in May 2022. In order for this program to continue, funds must be appropriated for the program during the 2022 Colorado Legislative Session.

New ESSER program for rural career-connected learning

Launched this week, the Rural Coaction Program supports Colorado’s rural districts in building career-connected learning opportunities (such as student pathways, internship programs, and CTE).

Applications will be accepted: Friday, April 1, for districts with established programs and/or partnerships interested in launching in fall 2022 and Monday, May 2, for those districts wanting to create a new program and/or need additional planning time.

PERA Saturday webinar series for members in education

A webinar series for educators who have questions about PERA has been set up once a month on Saturdays. The first one is set for 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 19, and will discuss useful benefit information. This webinar was created for anyone at any stage in their career, providing information to give participants a solid foundation to understand retirement benefits. The webinar will provide an overview of your PERA pension, including how it’s calculated, and will provide information about built-in benefits.

ESSER K-8 mathematics curricula and K-3 READ Act instructional programming grant

CDE is creating a grant program to support the purchase of high-quality, standards-aligned K-8 mathematics curricula and K-3 READ Act-approved instructional programs. This grant is funded under the Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) state reserve. An application information webinar is set 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 22. The due date for applications will be Friday, April 29. For detailed information about the grant program, see the program webpage.

Volunteers needed to review nominations for the Distinguished Administrator in Support of CLD Learners

The Office of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse Education seeks volunteers to review nominations for the Distinguished Administrator in Support of CLD Learners Award.

K-3 teacher evidence-based reading training requirements

All kindergarten through third-grade teachers in Colorado must submit documentation that they complied with the K-3 evidence-based reading training requirements by Monday, Aug. 1. Teachers may submit documentation through the Colorado Online Licensing systemLearn about the hours, content, and assessment requirements to complete this training and the various training options available.

Application open for educator preparation program financial assistance

The Educator Recruitment and Retention program was created by Senate Bill 21-185 to provide support to members of the armed forces and nonmilitary-affiliated educator candidates in pursuing a career as an educator and to provide support to local education providers to recruit, select, train, and retain highly qualified educators across the state. Qualified program applicants can apply for up to $10,000 in one-time financial assistance toward their educator preparation program costs if they commit to teaching in a rural or small rural district for three years.

Applicants must apply by Tuesday, May 31, to receive financial assistance for the 2021-22 school year. An application window for the 2022-23 school year will open this summer. Applications due for Education Workforce Program

The Education Workforce Program provides funding that supports Colorado LEAs in securing a strong, talented education workforce that can ensure safe in-person learning, address learning loss, complete unfinished learning and meet the COVID-related needs of Colorado students. Through the assistance funded under this program, LEAs will be able to ensure ongoing and high-quality learning continues for all students. Applications are due by Friday, March 25.

Apply for the Mentor Grant Program

A competitive grant will be available for districts to apply for funding to increase the quality of their mentoring program, train and compensate mentor teachers, and increase supports for teachers in their first three years.

This grant will serve as an opportunity for districts to build, enhance and strengthen mentoring programs to ensure beginning teachers have the support necessary to build instructional capacity and effectiveness in the classroom. The competitive grant will be awarded for the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. The application deadline is Monday, March 28. Applicants will be notified of final award status no later than Friday, May 13.

2022-23 Annual 4-Day School Week Application is open

School districts operating a four-day school week (less than 160 scheduled days per school year) are required to submit a request for approval.

To be considered for the 2022-23 School Year, please complete the application via the Directory in Data Pipeline by Wednesday, May 11. Districts requesting approval are not obligated to follow their proposed calendar if their local planning is not finalized.

In addition to submitting the four-day application through Data Pipeline, districts accredited with Priority Improvement Plan or with Turnaround Plan that are submitting a district-wide application must submit the following additional information separately to Jhon Penn:

  • A copy of their respective school calendars
  • Building class schedules, assembly schedules
  • Bell schedule including lunchtime interval and professional development calendar.

CDE will review the additional materials for the use and prioritization of instructional time. The executive director of Field Services and the associate commissioner of School Quality and Support must recommend approval of the application before it is forwarded to the commissioner for consideration.

School code change request deadline

Districts/local education agencies requesting a new school code, school name change, school grade change, and/or request for closing a school are required to submit the application, including the superintendent/executive director's signature, on or before Thursday, June 30, for the 2022-23 School Year. The submittal process opened on Feb. 3.

The School Code Change Request forms are located in the Year-Round Collections Directory on the Data Pipeline webpage.

The deadline to submit a change request is Thursday, June 30. Request approval cannot be guaranteed if submitted after June 30 deadline.

TLCC survey window extended to Friday, March 4

In response to requests for additional time, the survey window will be extended until the end of the day Friday, March 4. Educators need 15 minutes to complete the survey that provides useful feedback for school and district improvement planning efforts.

More than 50 districts have hit the 50% participation threshold for the Teaching and Learning Conditions Colorado survey, a statewide, confidential survey intended to provide schools, districts, and policymakers with reliable data on teaching and learning conditions.

Schools must have 50% participation and five responses to be able to access their data.

  • Online support form
  • Help Desk by toll-free number at 866-329-1530 (Monday-Friday 8 a.m.- 4 p.m.) or by email.

Rural principal position open on the Dyslexia Working Group

A rural principal is needed to serve a two-year term on the Dyslexia Working Group.

The working group was established in the 2019 legislative session by the Colorado General Assembly through House Bill 19-1134. The legislation directs the Commissioner of Education to convene a Dyslexia Working Group to improve the identification of and educational support for students with dyslexia to improve their educational outcomes.

Applications will be accepted until Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Call for Materials: Implementing the Colorado Essential Skills

Colorado educators have done some amazing work to integrate the Colorado Essential Skills into their instruction. As part of efforts to develop a Colorado Essential Skills implementation guide, CDE is looking for examples of the integration of the skills into instruction.

Educators will be contacted for examples of lesson plans, videos, display materials, activities, coaching strategies, and any other instructional materials. While this collection is voluntary, resources are needed for all grade levels and content areas.

The materials should be collected by Friday, March 11. Submit resources on the Essential Skills webpage.

Applications open for Piton Fellowship Youth Cohort

Gary Community Ventures is accepting applications and nominations for its Piton Fellowship Youth Cohort, which is open to Denver-area 14- to 20-year-olds who are looking to expand their learning and accelerate their leadership journeys alongside a network of peers. Gary Community Ventures will prioritize applicants of color and youth from diverse backgrounds.

The Youth Cohort runs from Monday, June 20, to Friday, July 29, and fellows can expect to learn from inspirational changemakers, connect with their communities, build leadership skills, explore career pathways and develop as human beings. Those who complete the program will also receive a $2,100 stipend.

Applications and nominations for the early acceptance period are due Friday, Feb. 25, and will be prioritized over applications and nominations received in the final acceptance period, which ends Friday, April 1.

Last call for Early Graduate Program applications

The Colorado Department of Higher Education's Early Graduate Program application closes on Friday, Feb. 11, at midnight. The Early Graduate Pilot Program provides funding to help low-income high school students who graduate early pay for postsecondary education and training programs, including college and workplace learning programs like internships or apprenticeships. Five applicants will be selected by the Colorado Commission on Higher Education on Friday, March 4.

CDHE is also partnering with Colorado Succeeds to provide application and implementation support to interested schools and districts.
