Four fast facts about I Matter Colorado

The I Matter program provides up to six free therapy sessions for youth in Colorado ages  18 and younger (or ages 21 and younger if receiving special education services). To date, more than 5,400 appointments have been scheduled, with more than 500 appointments scheduled for the next two weeks. Over 1,500 youth have received one or more sessions and youth from 46 of Colorado’s 64 counties have signed up for the program. View a map illustrating where sessions have been provided to children and adolescents across the state (PDF). A two-year extension of the program is in House Bill 22-1243 under consideration in the current session of the State Legislature. Funding is set to expire Thursday, June 30.

Register for the P-EBT Data Pipeline Training

Individuals responsible for submitting to the Data Pipeline should register for the P-EBT Data Pipeline training at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, March 30. CDE School Nutrition will provide detailed information for the P-EBT data submission process, including the new file layout requirements, how to navigate data pipeline, and resources to amend errors.

Submit a promising partnership practice

The State Advisory Council for Parent Involvement in Education, in collaboration with CDE, is collecting promising partnership practices from across the state to publish in the seventh annual Promising Partnership Practices Colorado book. SACPIE and CDE invite schools, districts, early childhood centers, institutions of higher education, accountability committees, parent-teacher committees, or any other school- or district-based council to submit an application for consideration in the publication. Submissions are due Friday, June 3.

Call for grant reviewers for the Education Workforce Program

CDE seeks peer reviewers for the Education Workforce Program Grant. The Education Workforce Grant provides funding that supports Colorado local education agencies in securing a strong, talented workforce that can ensure safe in-person learning, address learning loss, complete unfinished learning and meet the COVID-related needs of students. Through the assistance funded under this program, LEAs will ensure ongoing and high-quality learning continues for all students. Approximately $3 million is available for the 2022-23 school year.

Reviewers must have experience with education human resources and education workforce recruitment and retention. Reviewers will evaluate applications independently and then meet with a small review team between Tuesday, March 29, and Wednesday, April 13.

READ Act Instructional Programming Advisory List

The CDE Preschool Through Third Grade Office conducted reviews of core, supplemental and intervention instructional programs to be included on the READ Act Advisory List of Instructional Programming. Submit a CLDE Student Art Award application

Nominate elementary, middle, or high school student art for the “Stronger Together” Student Art Award. All Colorado students are invited to explore the theme of “Stronger Together” as it relates to themselves, their families, friends, or wider community. This is an opportunity for students to reflect on how they or others have been or might be, “Stronger Together” through the medium of fine art. Student art applications will be accepted until Friday, April 8.

The 2nd Annual Colorado Youth Career Fair

The only state-wide Youth Career Fair is just a month away, April 18th-21st 4:00-7:00 p.m.! My name is Shriya Biddala, 11th Grade, Peak to Peak Charter School, and I am a member of the Colorado State Youth Council (SYC), a youth advisory group to the Colorado Workforce Development Council (CWDC).

I am personally very excited to help connect students like myself with industry members from all sixteen Colorado Career Clusters. Students will have the opportunity to engage in Meaningful Career Conversations while learning about career paths that support each student’s Individual Career and Academic Plan (ICAP). The SYC firmly believes that every student/youth/parent in Colorado deserves the opportunity to learn about a variety of careers. In its inaugural year in 2021, the fair was 100% virtual. This year, we are proud to continue those efforts, for maximum accessibility, and to offer in-person components, as well.

Melanie D’Evelyn brings extensive college success experience to the Adams County Finish What You Started program supporting some college, no-degree adults.

CHICAGO, March 17, 2022 - One Million Degrees (OMD), a leading provider of wraparound student supports to ensure community college student success, today named Melanie D'Evelyn, as its Colorado executive director. As part of her responsibilities, Melanie will lead OMD’s partnership with the Colorado Opportunity Scholarship Initiative (COSI) to implement the Adams County Finish What You Started program for low-income Colorado adults, aged 25+, to obtain college credentials or degrees. D’Evelyn, a Colorado native, joins OMD from Detroit Drives Degrees, whereas director she focused on building a coalition of 50 colleges, business leaders, and funders to support college access, success, and upward pathways for adult students in the workforce.

PAEMST Awardees

Congratulations to Stephanie Basile and Michelle Dillard, Colorado's latest recipients of the Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching.

Stephanie Basile teaches at STEM Lab in Northglenn, part of the Adams 12 Five-Star School District, where she serves as the K-6 engineering and computer science teacher. See Stephanie's full award profile here.

The Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching are the highest honors bestowed by the U.S. government specifically for K-12 science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and/or computer science teaching. The awards were established by Congress in 1983 and the president may recognize up to 108 exemplary teachers each year from across the 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, Department of Defense Education Activity schools, and the U.S. territories as a group. The award recognizes those teachers who have both deep content knowledge of the subjects they teach and the ability to motivate and enable students to be successful in those areas.

2022-23 Concurrent Enrollment Grant Application available!

The Concurrent Enrollment Expansion & Innovation Grant program provides grants to partnering local education providers and institutions of higher education to expand and innovate concurrent enrollment opportunities to qualified students.

The 2022-23 grant awards up to $50,000 per approved applicant to be used through June 30, 2023.

Teacher Recruitment Education and Preparation application coming soon

The TREP program, created by Senate Bill 21-185, allows for qualified students in an educator pathway to receive funding for up to two years of college tuition. Twelfth-grade students who are enrolled in at least one course in the educator pathway can qualify for this opportunity. Interested districts should submit an Intent to Participate by Monday, April 11. See the TREP website for more information.

Encourage future educators to sign up with TEACH Colorado for access to resources to get a head start on their careers. TEACH Colorado provides a variety of free resources to aspiring educators. Make sure the future teachers in your community are connected by encouraging them to sign up for free.

Submit a nomination for Serving Up Science

Submit a nomination for school nutrition professionals in your district to attend "Serving up Science: The Path to Safe Food in Schools" by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 22. This four-day program developed by experts in food science at Kansas State University and USDA takes place June 20-24 in Manhattan, Kan. This program equips professionals with science-based food safety information to take back to their cafeterias. Attendees will learn how to overcome food safety challenges and become leaders who can establish a food safety culture in their districts.

All travel costs are the responsibility of the participant or their employer. However, all other program expenses including meals and lodging are provided.

Local Food Program application now open

Applications for districts to participate in the Local Food Program for School Year 2022-23 are open. The LFP is a statewide pilot that provides funding for school food authorities to purchase Colorado-grown, raised, processed, and value-added products.

Register now for an informational webinar about the program at 2 p.m. on Thursday, March 31.

Districts considering applying should complete the intent to apply form by Friday, April 1.

The application closes Friday, April 15.

Advanced Educational Identification of Autism Training

Dr. Bryn Harris will present the workshop "Educational Identification of Complex ASD Cases: Culturally and Linguistically Responsive Evaluations" from 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 7, and 4-7 p.m. on Thursday, April 14. This workshop will provide school professionals with advanced training pertaining to considerations regarding ASD assessment practices when working with traditionally underserved children. Participants must attend both sessions to receive a certificate of attendance (six CDE hours). Partial credit will not be given.

This training is available to only those who have completed the CDE Educational Identification of ASD Toolkit training. Registration is limited. Priority will go to those who have not previously attended.

K-3 teacher evidence-based reading training requirements

All kindergarten through third-grade educators who teach reading and literacy skills in Colorado must complete their evidence-based reading training requirements by Monday, Aug. 1. Documentation that they complied with the K-3 evidence-based reading training requirements should be submitted by Monday, Aug. 15.

Licensed teachers should submit documentation through the Colorado Online Licensing system. Non-licensed educators will submit their request for documentation approval form via Google form.

The Mentor Grant Program is open for applications. Grant funds can be used to help develop, support, or grow mentoring programs for new and pre-service teachers. Applications are due by Monday, March 28.

Volunteer as a reviewer for the Mentor Program Grant

Reviewers are needed for the Mentor Program Grant, a program that develops, supports, and expands mentoring programs for new teachers. Approximately $9.5 million will be available during the 2022-23 and 2023-24 school years. Reviewers will score and provide feedback on grant applications.

Update on K-12 Education Accountability Systems Performance Evaluation

The Colorado Office of the State Auditor and its contractor, the Human Resources Research Organization, continue to work on the performance evaluation of Colorado's K-12 education accountability systems required by House Bill 21-1294.

HumRRO will engage with districts, schools, and parents to invite participation in online surveys and, in some cases, virtual interviews and focus groups. Communication about these activities will be sent the week of March 21 directly to district superintendents for further dissemination to district and school personnel and parents, as applicable.

Participation in the surveys, interviews, and focus groups is voluntary. However, the OSA and HumRRO encourage districts, schools, and parents to recognize the value that their participation will have for providing information to the Colorado General Assembly about the effectiveness of certain aspects of Colorado's current K-12 education accountability systems.
