School nurse workforce grant application now available

The new School Nurse Work Force Grant Program is funded through the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s COVID-19 Public Health Workforce Supplemental Funding and will support Local Education Providers in their efforts to recruit, hire, and retain school nurse staff.

Local Education Providers (LEP) may apply for funding for the three main focus areas of the School Nurse Workforce Grant: to help schools achieve adequate school nurse staffing to support the application of COVID-19 health guidance and to respond to the growing needs of students with chronic conditions; to increase the school nurse’s capacity to successfully keep schools open for in-person learning while protecting the health and safety of school community members; and to support Local Education Providers in their efforts to recruit and retain qualified school nurses.

Approximately $8 million is available to award for the 2021-22 and 2022-23 school years. CDE anticipates awarding grants in the amount of $20,000 - $350,000 for an 18-month period. Funding requests may be lower than $20,000 but should not exceed $350,000.

Public invited to comment on draft plan for Universal Preschool Program

Public feedback is sought through Wednesday, Dec. 15, on a draft report that outlines key recommendations for the voter-approved, voluntary, universal preschool program. A series of virtual listening sessions also will be held to share the draft plan and gather public feedback.

Public comment may be provided through an online feedback form now through Wednesday, Dec.15.

The universal preschool program, which will be overseen by the new Department of Early Childhood, will allow Colorado families to access 10 hours of high-quality early care and education per week, per child, in the year prior to the child entering kindergarten. It is set to launch in 2023.

The draft report was released by the Transition Working Group, created by the General Assembly to guide the future of early childhood care and education in Colorado as the state looks to improve and expand child care and education for all families. Based on stakeholder feedback received through this process, the recommendations will be updated and submitted to the Early Childhood Leadership Commission by Saturday, Jan. 1. The ECLC will have two weeks to approve the recommendations and submit the plan to the Governor and the General Assembly.
