News & Notes

KN95 masks for Colorado schools

On July 16, Gov. Jared Polis announced that Colorado will provide educators with medical-grade masks. This offer includes any staff who work directly with students at public schools, private schools, charters, BOCES, districts and facility schools.

CDE is working with the State Emergency Operations Center to coordinate the delivery to Colorado school districts, BOCES and facility schools of a 10-week supply of KN95 masks -- one mask per week -- for every staff member who works with students. Charter schools and non-Catholic private schools will be asked to pick up their supply of masks at the district in which they are located. Masks for staff at Catholic schools will be delivered to each diocese.

Representatives from the State Emergency Operations Center are calling school districts, BOCES, charters, facility schools and private schools to coordinate delivery, confirm physical addresses and numbers of staff people who need the masks. We anticipate that deliveries will begin on Aug. 17.

For more information, visit the KN95 Masks for Colorado Schools webpage.

For questions, contact the State Emergency Operations Center’s School PPE Helpline at 720-230-6913.
• The helpline will be operational beginning July 30.
• The helpline is limited to confirming the number of  of masks needed for staff and the delivery address of the school.

School reopening guidance now available

The Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment (CDPHE) released guidance for detecting, reporting, and responding to cases and outbreaks of COVID-19 in schools.

The guidance provides specific steps a school should take in response to cases and outbreaks and outlines when classrooms, cohorts, and schools should close. It is a go-to manual for school leadership experiencing one or more cases of COVID-19.

Schools are required to report all suspected and confirmed outbreaks to their local public health agency or CDPHE within four hours.

Clinical labs and health care providers report cases to public health; however, schools also are encouraged to report single cases of COVID-19 to their local public health agency.

This case and outbreak guidance, the guidance for the fall opening of schools, CDE’s toolkit for the 2020-21 school year, and guidance from local public health agencies will provide districts with the information they need to start the school year in a way that makes sense for their local communities. CDPHE will update guidance as additional information becomes available.

A shorter executive summary of the school case and outbreak guidance is linked here.
