Mental Health America: Back to School Toolkit

Student mental health must be a priority this school year.

Mental Health America recognizes the profound impact that the COVID-19 pandemic has had on youth mental health. Therefore, as students across the country return to their classrooms, we know we must prioritize their mental health and emotional well-being so that they can thrive in and out of the school setting.

Today, MHA launches our annual Back to School Toolkit to give parents, teachers, and school personnel the tools and resources they need to support their children’s mental health.

State of School Safety Report

Safe and Sound Schools Delivers the
2021 State of School Safety Report
We are proud to share the results of the annual State of School Safety Report in partnership with Raptor Technologies and the Jeffco/DeAngelis Foundation. The goal of this year’s report was to assess perceptions, issues, and gaps in safety as students head back to school this Fall.
The study seeks to better understand how different members of the school community - students and their families, teachers, administrators, and other safety officials - perceive the COVID-19 pandemic, mental health, gun violence, and other top safety concerns. It is Safe and Sound Schools’ mission to share this data to help identify and implement solutions for crisis prevention, response, and recovery.
Fall 2021’s return to in-person learning will be an unprecedented one, and our findings show that attitudes regarding safety need to unify before campuses reopen. Here are a few responses that stand out:
  • More than 25% of administrators are either not sure or feel schools are unprepared for an active shooter attack.
  • Students and parents overwhelmingly indicate that they have experienced both anxiety and depression as a result of the pandemic.
  • However, close to 90% of students believe there are mental health resources available at schools, while parents are slightly less confident at 71%.
  • Only 65% of parents believe schools are proactive on safety awareness, compared to 94% of school administrators.
Click here to download and read the full 2021 State of School Safety Report.
We hope you will share this report with community leaders and address your school’s preparedness this Fall. For more ways to make your school safer, head to safeandsoundschools.org.

Colorado State Board of Education sends letter to Governor Polis

On Tuesday, June 29, 2021, the Colorado State Board of Education sent a letter to Governor Polis encourages "encourage little-to-no state-level regulation of in-person learning next year." It goes on to read, "The experience gained during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as in previous years of experience mitigating influenza and other infectious disease outbreaks, have taught superintendents and their staff what strategies work best in their communities. During the upcoming 2021-22 school year, superintendents and local boards must have the authority to make decisions in support of unrestricted in-person learning."

NSBA Poll Results

The National School Boards Action Center today released a national public opinion poll on public education. You can access the poll by going directly to the NSBAC website at https://nsbac.org The findings are from a nationwide survey of 1,000 likely 2022 voters with oversamples of 100 African American, 100 Latinx, 100 AAPI, 100 Native American, and 100 parents of school-age children who are likely 2022 voters. The poll results are available to the public.

 Some highlights include:

  • Voters continue to value the job public schools are doing in their community with 55 percent rating them positively.
  • Learning loss among students due to the COVID-19 pandemic is a key priority, with 88 percent saying it is a problem, including 65 percent who say it is a "very big" problem.
  • 89 percent of Democrats, 73 percent of Republicans, and 70 percent of independents view easier access to technology and broadband as important. The largest obstacle for public school districts, named by 66 percent of voters as challenging, was having quality broadband and internet access at home to attend school online.
  • 59 percent of voters think funding for public schools should be increased. Of those who believe it should be increased, 86 percent would support an increase in funding even if it meant they would pay more in taxes.
  • 61 percent of voters say it is better to allocate funds to improving public education and schools, compared to only 18 percent who support vouchers to pay for students to attend private or religiously affiliated schools.
  • 74 percent say a lack of personalized learning focused on individual needs is a problem.
