Call for peer reviewers to review educator preparation content endorsement standards

CDE seeks peer reviewers for the endorsement standards content of educator preparation programs.

Reviewers should have knowledge in one or more of the following content areas: principal, administration, CLD, CLD bilingual, early childhood, early childhood special education, elementary, English/Language Arts, science, social studies, instructional technology specialist, middle school math, reading teacher, reading specialist, school counselor, special education, school audiology, school social worker, school occupational therapist or world language.

Peer reviews will be conducted virtually during the week of July 11. Reviewers will have access to a training video and the review itself can take between 2 to 5 hours. Educators from school districts throughout the P-20 educational system, internal CDE content experts as well as higher education faculty are invited to register for the reviews by completing this form no later than Tuesday, May 31.

Time is running out for teachers to complete evidence-based reading training

Colorado’s educators who teach literacy to K-3 students must submit proof that they completed their evidence-based training in teaching reading by Monday, Aug. 15.

Teachers must complete the training by Monday, Aug. 1.

Teachers may submit evidence of successfully completing an undergraduate or graduate course in teaching reading for CDE to review to determine whether it meets the statutory requirements. This application closes on Wednesday, June 1.

Please note that the READ Act training requirement is not mandatory to maintain a teacher’s license status in any way. The benefit of adding the READ Act training designation to an educator’s license is that the proof of completion will stay on the educator’s Colorado credentials for future years as they may change grade levels, schools or districts.

Improvement planning training videos

New on-demand training videos are available on the Unified Improvement Planning and Accountability training webpage:

  • “Early Literacy UIP Requirements”: an overview of UIP requirements related to the READ Act, including requirements related to data analysis and action planning to support struggling readers.
  • “How to Use Strategy Guides in the Improvement Planning Process”: a brief introduction to CDE's Strategy Guides.
  • “Implementing an Early Learning Needs Assessment”: a summary of what an Early Learning Needs Assessment (ELNA) is and how to incorporate it into the UIP.
  • “Small N Analysis & Data Analysis for Disaggregated Groups”: guidance for schools and districts on how to conduct analysis for public reporting on small student populations.

Technical Advisory Panel: At-Large Membership Opportunity

CDE seeks one additional member to serve on the Technical Advisory Panel for Longitudinal Growth. The seat will be at-large and appointed to a person who has the requisite technical background and experience. The TAP serves as an advisory body to CDE regarding the implementation of the Colorado Growth Model and the Educational Accountability Act. Further responsibilities are outlined in Colorado Statute (22-11-202). The 14 TAP members serve three-year terms without compensation. 

Meetings are typically held on a quarterly basis at CDE.

Candidates must submit a letter of interest and a resume by Friday, July 1. Applicants must demonstrate some level of expertise related to assessment, educational research, the Colorado growth model and/or educational accountability. The selected candidate will be notified prior to Friday, July 15.

Join the Family, School and Community Partnership P-12 Framework Collaborative in 2022-23

Join a collaborative of districts using the Family, School, and Community Partnership P-12 rubrics in continuous improvement. Collaborative teams may attend quarterly cluster meetings and receive coaching support from CDE using the FSCP P-12 Framework and Rubrics to guide annual planning and implementation. Over the course of the school year, teams will determine starting points, strategies, progress monitoring benchmarks, as well as integration opportunities with the Unified Improvement Plan and Progress Monitoring tools. Submit a Promising Partnership Practice by Friday, June 3

The State Advisory Council for Parent Involvement in Education is collecting promising partnership practices from schools, districts, early childhood programs, and institutes of higher education across the state to publish in the seventh annual Promising Partnership Practices—Colorado book. The purpose of this book is for schools, districts, and other educational organizations in Colorado to share how they partner with families and the community for student success.

Make a plan to complete K-3 teacher evidence-based reading training

All kindergarten through third-grade educators who teach reading and literacy skills in Colorado must complete their evidence-based reading training requirements by Monday, Aug. 1. Department of Early Childhood opens applications for Local Coordinating Organizations

The Department of Early Childhood has opened applications for Local Coordinating Organizations. LCOs will coordinate the early childhood system in their community, including the mixed delivery system of Universal Preschool. A proposed LCO map and school district guide has been released along with the application. The application is due Monday, June 20. The transition team will be offering virtual office hours to answer applicant questions Mondays at 12:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 5 p.m.

Apply NOW to be an advisor on the Colorado Department of Early Childhood’s Rules Advisory Council

Advisors are needed for the Colorado Department of Early Childhood's first Rules Advisory Council. This 15-member RAC will advise the CDEC executive director on developing rules to guide the functions, programs, and services that the new department will oversee. The RAC will represent a wide range of voices and perspectives from urban, suburban, and rural settings, and who represent diversity in race, ethnicity, immigration status, age, sexual orientation, gender identity, culture, and language. Learn more about the RAC on this flyer.

Early childhood education educators and early childhood mental health consultants can now apply for loan forgiveness

Up to $5,000 in federal student loan forgiveness is available annually to early childhood education educators and mental health consultants. Priority will be given to those early in their career and bilingual professionals. The first round of applications closes Wednesday, June 15. With limited funds, not all who apply will receive the award. This is a two-year program. Applicants must re-apply annually to be considered.

This program is a partnership between the Office of Early Childhood within the Colorado Department of Human Services and the Colorado Department of Higher Education. Application instructions and a checklist of information can be found on CDHE's website. Additionally, financial wellness support, including help navigating the Federal Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program, counseling to find the best student loan repayment strategy for your situation, and more, will be made available free of charge to up to 3,000 program applicants.

Request for Recommendations: Colorado Educator Talent Pool

CDE maintains a file of emerging classroom leaders who are considered distinguished teachers and principals. These educators may be candidates for advisory boards, task forces, and special recognition programs. Your recommendations will identify educators who will be of great value to your community and state, and who may also ultimately be considered for a prestigious recognition.

We are fortunate to have a rich base of veteran educators represented in our current talent pool. What is particularly lacking is representation from elementary educators new to the profession with five to 12 years of experience, who demonstrate unusual instructional and leadership ability.

A minimum of five years in education is a must. Candidates are building-level personnel. They are typically classroom teachers as opposed to specialists and are recognized by peers and supervisors as unique in their growth. Occasionally a principal or specialist is considered. Educators who are outstanding but have not received other recognition are of special interest. Recommendation deadline is Friday, June 20.

Submit your application for the 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year

The application for the 2023 Colorado Teacher of the Year is available. Each year, the Colorado Teacher of the Year Program honors an exceptionally dedicated, knowledgeable, and skilled K-12 classroom teacher to represent the entire profession in the state. The selected teacher will also automatically become Colorado's nominee for the National Teacher of the Year competition.

Technical Advisory Panel for Longitudinal Student Growth to meet May 19

The Technical Advisory Panel for Longitudinal Student Growth will meet at 1 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. The public meeting will be held by Zoom.

The meeting agenda will focus on growth participation calculations, ELP on-track growth, and other accountability-related topics.

New Learning Cohorts for 2022-23 school year

CDE is offering new learning cohorts for school and district leaders for the 2022-23 school year to support learning and collaboration in targeted areas of school improvement. Learning cohorts will convene for three to six sessions to learn together, share and observe practices of other schools, and discuss strategies for implementation. The cohorts will meet via Zoom and/or in-person sessions depending on the cohort. Learning cohorts are free to participants. Districts may be required to cover costs of travel if applicable.

CDE will host the following cohorts for the 2202-23 school year:

  • Alternative Education Campus
  • Best Practices in 6-12 Grading
  • Improving District Services for English Learners
  • Online School & Program Leaders

Social Studies Standards Review Committee presentation date change

The presentation of the final recommendations for revisions to Colorado’s social studies standards is being changed from the May to the June State Board of Education meeting. The change provides board members and the public adequate time to review proposed changes prior to the presentation from the social studies committee.

Teaching and Learning CoLabs

This summer, teachers, and leaders are invited to attend Teaching and Learning CoLabs, a new kind of no-cost event that brings together stakeholders from districts, higher education, professional teaching, and other organizations and CDE. The dates and host sites for this summer's CoLabs are:

  • Thursday, June 2, hosted by Colorado Mesa University in Grand Junction
  • Wednesday, June 8, hosted by the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley
  • Tuesday, June 21, hosted by CSU-Pueblo in Pueblo

Schools are encouraged to attend a CoLab in teams, with teachers representing multiple grades and/or content areas. Focus content areas for 2022 include English language arts, health, and physical education, mathematics, science, and computer science. Leadership-focused sessions will be provided for principals and other school leaders.

CoMath Conversation

Join in for the May CoMath Conversation at 3:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 19. This month's topic is "What should we do when the teaching strategies we see promoted in other content areas aren't the ones we want to use in math class?" This conversation will give participants time to discuss examples, explore some crosswalks and weigh the pros and cons of different perspectives and approaches.

2022-2023 Computer Science Education Grant Applications

The Computer Science Education Grant Program application window will open for the 2022-23 school year on Tuesday, May 17. The application process will run through the summer, and awards will be distributed for use during the 2022-23 school year. This includes the Computer Science Teacher Education Grant that provides funds for K-12 computer science teacher professional development and the Computer Science Education Grant that provides funding with the purpose of increasing enrollment and participation of traditionally underrepresented students in computer science education activities.
