Capital Construction

Notify CDE of intent to apply for BEST grants in 2022-23
 

Applicants for the 2022-23 round of Building Excellent Schools Today grants should provide notification by Tuesday, Nov. 30, that they intend to apply by filling out the registration.

Local matches are required for all BEST grants. Match percentages will be posted in December. The application portal will open on Wednesday, Jan. 5.

Here is the timeline:

  • Applications are due electronically by Friday, Feb. 4.
  • The Capital Construction Assistance Board will meet May 18-20 to review applications and create a prioritized list of projects to recommend to the State Board of Education.
  • The State Board of Education will meet to review and vote on the prioritized list no later than June 30.
  • By Friday, July 15, the Capital Development Committee will meet to review and vote on those projects recommended for financing through lease-purchase agreements.

Green Schools Summit 2021
 

The U.S. Green Building Council's Green School Summit is scheduled for Thursday, Dec. 2, and Friday, Dec. 3. The first day will be an update on Colorado's Building Excellent Schools Today program. The two-day program will cover decarbonization, electrification, funding strategies, empowering students through storytelling, indoor air quality and more.

As schools face challenges around sustainable operations and managing a healthy environment during a global pandemic, there are also many opportunities, including new funding sources, technologies and strategies to overcome these challenges.

Volunteers needed for READ Act Instructional Programming Review
 

CDE's Preschool through Third Grade Office seeks volunteers to review instructional programming aligned to the READ Act. Initial reviews will be conducted virtually over multiple days in January. The application for volunteer reviewers is available on the 2021-22 READ Act Instructional Programming Review Processing webpage.  The volunteer reviewer application will close Wednesday, Dec. 15.

School Climate Transformation Training Series
 

The second in a three-part training series on improving school climate will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 1. This interactive session will focus on how to use various indicators of school climate (i.e., perception survey, discipline, and observation data, etc.) as part of a Multi-Tiered System of Supports to strengthen universal supports. This session will also address how to integrate school climate data into improvement planning. Participants do not need to have attended the first training to fully participate. Participants should complete this form if they have not already registered and/or don’t have an official invitation on their calendars.

Department of Early Childhood transition plan approved
 

Colorado’s Early Childhood Leadership Commission approved a transition plan for the state's new, unified Department of Early Childhood. This is a critical milestone in Colorado’s commitment to efficiently and effectively serve young children and their families. It is also the first step in developing and implementing the state’s voter-approved, voluntary, universal preschool program by 2023.

COVID relief funds to make long-term investments in curriculum and instruction
 

With an influx of COVID relief funds, schools are seeking ways to overcome problems brought on by the pandemic. CDE’s Office of Standards and Instructional Support recommends that schools consider making significant investments in teaching and learning, especially where spending supports long-term improvements in the classroom.
