Craig Middle School recognized with the 2019 CASB Student Achievement Program Award

DENVER — The Colorado Association of School Boards (CASB) recognized Craig Middle School in Moffat County RE-1 School District for the Student Achievement Program Award for a middle school program.

CASB accepted nominations from districts across Colorado showcasing programs that excel in student achievement. Examples of district programs submitted included student-led STEM engineering, personalized blended learning, internships, biomedical science, college preparation, CTE, manufacturing and carpentry.

Craig Middle School’s program was selected based on its desire for all students to have an opportunity to engage in STEM-based education through the Engineering elective course. Although this course is fairly new, there are approximately 150 students in grades 6 – 8 that are registered per semester. The curriculum utilizes the engineering design thinking process to give students problem-based learning in order to analyze and create solutions for real-world problems both globally and locally. Students present their ideas to community members, who in turn provide feedback. Students also learn coding skills that are applied in creative ways from programming robots to complete various tasks as well as the creation of video games. Students who may struggle with traditional academics have found success in Engineering with the “hands-on minds-on” learning approach. They have presented to city council in order to advocate for change in the community and most recently, they worked with the director of food services to replace Styrofoam lunch trays in the cafeteria. Students also compete regionally in the Lego League robotics competition and participated in the state competition this year.

The award was presented by Martha McGill of CenterPoint Energy and Leslie Bogar, CASB Director of Professional Learning, at the annual awards luncheon on Friday, December 6, where more than 500 education leaders gathered to celebrate excellence in public education. This is the second year CASB selected student achievement programs to honor and showcase at the awards luncheon. McGill introduced the award and explained, “It’s exciting to be here today to help highlight two inspiring programs. CenterPoint Energy is honored to be the 2019 sponsor of the Student Achievement Program Award.” The other Student Achievement Program Award went to the Jeffco Innovation Acceleration Fund.

The Awards Luncheon was held during CASB’s annual Convention last week. More than 1,100 school board members, superintendents, and education leaders from across Colorado gathered in Colorado Springs for professional development and networking. CASB is the only statewide organization that advocates for school board leadership in Colorado. It works to promote the interests and welfare of Colorado’s 178 school districts. CASB uses its expertise and collective state presence to provide cost-effective services and information to enable locally elected boards of education to operate efficiently and effectively in an increasingly complex and resource-challenged environment.
