Exceptional Student Services
The Autism Literacy Institute, Tier 1 and 2
The Autism Literacy Institute will be conducted by nationally recognized experts on literacy and Autism Spectrum Disorder, Dr. Christi Carnahan and Dr. Pam Williamson and will focus on a balanced approach to literacy including instruction in phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary, reading comprehension and writing. Each aspect of literacy will be linked to the unique cognitive, social and communication issues inherent in ASD. Assessment strategies will include an overall estimation of the students' literacy abilities from interactive to independent, which will help teachers determine what additional literacy assessments may be needed to inform instruction. Measures of student outcomes and teacher outcomes will be incorporated into the project, developed by the presenters.
The Autism Literacy Institute Tier 2 training will build on content discussed in the Tier 1 training. Participants will develop and bring assessment data from their students, and develop balanced literacy lessons for those students indicated by the data.
The Literacy Institute will be held virtually on:
- Thursday, Sept. 29 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
- Thursday, Oct. 21 noon to 3 p.m.
- Wednesday, Dec. 8 noon to 3 p.m.
There will also be two in person events Feb. 16 and 17 from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. in Denver, however due to COVID-19 this is subject to change. The in person sessions will also be broadcasted out to remote sites.

New Child and Adult Care Food Program Participation story map
The new Child and Adult Care Food Program Participation story map shows whether Colorado licensed child care providers serving children birth through 5 are participating in CACFP. The story map has a number of features, including overlays of food deserts and poverty data, several community-specific profiles, and an interactive version with various filters. Additionally, it includes strategies for action based on information in the story map.
The story map provides an opportunity to be a voice for CACFP. It shows where gaps may exist in your community regarding food access for our youngest students. The map provides a visual that may be used to share the benefits of participating in CACFP.
This work supports the Colorado Shines Brighter Strategic Plan strategy 2.2.1 Quality Nutrition in ECE Settings.
