Better Decisions for Budget Challenges
A Three-Part CASB Webinar Series

Register online!

There’s nothing easy about cutting school budgets, and that unpleasant task is not going away soon. To help school leaders make better, more informed decisions, CASB is offering a three-part Webinar series focusing on three key areas of budget management in tough times.

Join us for these noon-hour sessions through the convenience of your computer and telephone. Each Webinar includes an optional Q-and-A period from 1-1:30 p.m.

Part 1  Feb. 10, 2010 — RIFs   All three Webinars
begin at Noon with
an optional Q-and-A
session from
1-1:30 p.m.
  Part 2    Feb. 24, 2010 —Budgeting
  Part 3    Mar. 3, 2010 — Communication

In Part 1, CASB attorneys Kathy Shannon and Kathleen Sullivan will provide guidance on conducting legally sound reductions in force (RIF) and other personnel-based budget decisions. With personnel expenses accounting for approximately 80 percent of school district budgets, it is unlikely that even the most strategic and well-positioned school district will avoid budget cuts impacting school personnel. Join CASB's attorneys for a discussion of the legal requirements pertaining to RIFs and other budget decisions impacting school jobs.

Glenn Gustafson, chief operating officer, Colorado Springs District 11 and Natalie Morin, director of business services, Cheyenne Mountain District 12 will lead Part 2 of the Webinar. They will cover practical budget cutting considerations such as staffing, salary negotiations, legal issues and union relationships while keeping in mind equity, reason and community involvement. These school finance experts, representing both large and small districts, will update participants on the state budget situation, how it relates to the local level and will review budget preparation timelines.

Part 3 will give you the information you need to know to effectively communicate budget ramifications with your community. Jennifer Reeve, APR, assistant executive director and Brad Stauffer, APR, director of communications, CASB, will share steps to get input from school stakeholders, effective strategies for communicating decisions with those stakeholders and provide examples of how districts are strategically managing the communications process.
