CDE Asks Coloradans for Definitions Surrounding Colorado Content Standards

The Colorado Department of Education recently announced it will ask Colorado citizens to assist in defining 21st Century Skills and Abilities, Early School Readiness, Postsecondary Readiness and Workforce Readiness in a survey available through October 10, 2008.

The development and approval of these definitions by the Colorado State Board of Education is pivotal in revising the Colorado Model Content Standards process. The office of standards and assessments is asking Coloradoans to help the department define what skills and abilities must be included in the revision of these standards as the state prepares students for a modern workforce and a global marketplace.

Energy Efficient Schools

In 2007, Gov. Ritter signed HB 1309 requiring the Governor’s Energy Office (GEO) to improve energy efficiency in all Colorado schools. To accomplish this directive, the GEO developed the K-12 Energy Performance Contract (EPC) Program. Districts interested in this program can complete an Interest form available at www.colorado.gov/energy/resources/opportunities.asp

For more information about this program, visit www.colorado.gov/energy/commerical/performance-contracting.asp

Free School Program Helping Kids Learn about Energy

The Energy Hog makes learning about energy fun! The program, which begins with classroom lessons and ends with a memorable visit from a “real, live” Energy Hog, teaches students where energy comes from, how we use energy, and the importance of energy efficiency and conservation. The program is designed for grades 2-6, but may be adapted for younger or older kids. Thanks to funding provided by the Colorado Governor’s Energy Office, the program is now available to CO elementary schools free of charge during the 2008-2009 school year.

To learn how your school can participate, contact Maria Ellingson, (303) 333-4570.

Mapping Colorado's Educational Progress 2008

Six years after No Child Left Behind's passage, the Department of Education has more data than ever before about the academic performance of students and schools across the U.S. They organized this information by creating two-page "dashboards," one for the nation and every state, that includes statistics on National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) scores, graduation rates, schools making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP), highly qualified teachers, parents taking advantage of choice and supplemental educational services, and more. The individual state summaries provide information for anyone trying to get an overview of the condition of a state's education system.

Colorado Close Up Turns 30!

Throughout early 2009, hundreds of high school students from across Colorado will flock to the State Capitol in Denver to participate in Colorado Close Up, an experiential education program and one of the largest civic-engagement initiatives in the state. But this year, students will not only participate in three action packed days designed to introduce them to policies and practices in state and local government; they’ll also be part of history, as Colorado Close Up begins its 30th Anniversary Celebration.
